GAME OF BASKETBALL

BASKETBALL





Basket ball is played between two teams of five players each. The objective of each team is to score points by throwing the ball into the opponent's basket and to prevent the other side from securing the ball or scoring. The ball may be passed , thrown, tapped, rolled or dribbled in any direction,subject to the restrictions laid down in the rules. It is purely a handling game.







The origin of the game of basket ball dates back to 1891 in America. The game was first played in the Y.M.C.A College of Physical Education, Springfield, U.S.A and the first Rule Book of the game was published by James Naismith in 1895. The game was first practiced on suspend peach baskets and it was those baskets which gave the game its name and later peach baskets were replaced by hoops fixed on a pole or board 10 feet above the ground. The game of basket ball was first included in the Olympics in 1936, with was held in Berlin.



In India this game was played for the first time in 1930. The first Indian National championship for men was conducted in 1934 in New Delhi. The Basket Ball Federation of India which controls the game in India was formed in 1950. It is a popular game and is considered to be a game of the masses. Its popularity stems from the fact that it is a fast scoring game in which there is intense activity from the beginning till the end.

Field and Equipments

Court
The playing court shall be a rectangular hard surface free from obstructions and shall have dimensions of 26m in length by 14m in width, measured from the inside edge of the boundary line. The playing court shall be marked by well defined lines, which shall be at every point at least 12m from any obstruction. The lines of the long sides of the court shall be termed the Side lines and those of the short sides are called End lines. The distance between these lines and the spectators should be at least 2m.

Movements



The ball goes into play when the official enters the circle to administer a jump ball or the official enters the free throw line to administer a free throw and when in an out-of-bounds situation the ball is at the disposal of the player who is at the point of the throw in.

Jump Ball

A jump ball takes place when the official tosses the ball between two opposing players. At that time the two jumpers shall stand with their feet inside the half of the circle which is nearer to their own baskets, with one foot near the center of the line that is between them. An official shall then toss the ball upward (vertically) in a plane at right angles to the side lines between the jumpers, to a height greater than either of them can reach by jumping and so that it will drop between them. The ball must be tapped by one or both of the jumpers after it reaches its highest point. If it touches the floor without being tapped by at least one of the jumpers, the official shall put the ball in play again in the same place. When a jump ball takes place the eight non-jumpers shall remain outside the circle until the ball has been tapped.

The ball becomes alive after having reached its highest point in a jump ball it is tapped by the first player or the official places it at the disposal of free thrower or on a throw-in from out-of-bounds it touches a player in the court.

Dribble

A dribble is made when a player, having gained control of the ball, gives movement to it by throwing, tapping or rolling it . The player cannot move unless he bounces or dribbles the ball. Once a player touches the ball with both the hands he is not permitted to dribble again.

Throw

To hold the ball in one or both hands and then project it through the air towards the basket.

Dunk

To force or attempt to force the ball downward into the basket.

Tap

To strike the ball with a hand or hands towards the basket.

Free Throws

A free throw is an opportunity given to a player to score one point from an unhindered shot for goal from a position directly behind the free throw lines.

Held ball

A held ball shall be declared when two or more players of opposing teams have one or both hands firmly on the ball. Officials should not declare held ball too quickly, thereby interrupting the continuity of the game and unjustly taking the ball from the player who gained or is about to gain possession. When held ball is called, the ball shall be tossed up between the two contending players at the nearest circle. If there are more than two players involved, the ball shall be tossed up between two contending players of approximately same height.

Dead Ball

The ball becomes dead when

  • any goal is made

  • any violation occurs

  • a foul occurs while the ball is alive or in play

  • held ball occurs or ball lodges on the basket support

  • it is apparent that the ball will not go into the basket; on a free throw for a technical foul by coach, assistant coach or team follower

  • official's whistle is blown while the ball is alive or in play

  • the 30 seconds operator's signal is sounded while the ball is alive

  • time expires for a half or extra period.

  • Game

Each team shall consist of not more than eleven players, one of whom shall be the captain. Five players from each team shall be on the court during playing time and may be substituted within the provisions. The game shall consist of two halves of 20 minutes each, with normally an interval of 10 minutes between each halves. The game shall be started by a jump ball in the center circle. The referee shall make the toss between any two opponents. The visiting team shall have choice of baskets in the first half; on neutral courts, team shall toss for baskets. For the second half, the teams shall change baskets. The game cannot begin if one of the teams is not on the court with five players.

The captain shall be the representative of his team and shall control its play. Before leaving the playing court for any valid reason, he shall inform the referee regarding the player who will replace him.

The officials shall be a referee and an umpire, who shall be assisted by a timekeeper, a scorer and a 30 seconds operator.

Interfere with ball in offense

An offense player may not touch the ball when it is in its downward flight above the level of the ring and is directly above the restricted area. This restriction applies only until the ball touches the ring. An offensive player shall not touch his opponent's basket or backboard while the ball is on the ring during a shot for goal.

Interfere with ball in defense

A defensive player shall not touch the ball after it has started its downward flight during an opponent's shot for goal and while the ball is above the level of the ring. The ball becomes dead when violation occurs.

Throw in from out of bound

The players who is to throw the ball in from out of bounds shall stand out of bounds at the side line at a spot nearest the point where the ball left the court or the violation or foul was committed.

Whenever the ball is awarded to a team for a throw in from out of bounds at the side line in its back court, the official, if there is confusion as to the decision, shall hand the ball to the thrower in at the side line closest to the violation.

Foul

A foul is an infraction of the Rules involving personal contact with an opponent or un-sportsmanlike behaviour charged against the offender and consequently penalized according to the provisions of the relevant article of the rules. When a personal foul is called, a free throw penalty is awarded, the player upon whom the foul was committed shall be designated by the official to attempt the free throws. When a technical foul is called, the free throws may be attempted by any player of the opposing team.

A violation is an infraction of the rules the penalty for which is the loss of the ball by the violating team. When a violation is called the ball becomes dead. The ball is awarded to a nearby opponents for a throw in from the side line at the point nearest that where the violation occurred. If the ball goes into a basket during the dead ball which follows such a violation, no point can be scored.

Scoring

A game shall be decided by scoring of the greater number of points during the playing time. A goal is made when a live ball enters the basket from above and remain in or passes through. A goal from the field counts 2 points unless attempted from the three point field goal area when it counts 3 points, a goal from a free throw counts 1 point. A goal from the field counts for the team attacking the basket into which the ball is thrown.

If a score is a tie at the expiration of the second half, play shall be continued for an extra period of 5 minutes or as many such periods of 5 minutes as may be necessary to break the tie. Before the first extra period the team shall toss for baskets and shall change baskets at the beginning of each additional extra period. At the beginning of each extra period, the ball shall be put in play at the center circle.

The game shall terminate at the sounding of the timekeeper's signal indicating the end of playing time. When a foul is committed simultaneously with or just previous to the timekeeper's signal ending a half or an extra period, any eventual free throw or throws, as a result of the foul be taken.
